The difference between Men & Boys

As my mother was fond of saying, "The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys."

I got new flip flops! I know, I know, such heady news. About 8 years ago I decided to embrace my "inner Californian" and wear flip flops in public, shorts in the winter and remind my hair that it's supposed to be blond. These flip flops are another step in that direction, go bold with color!
What's so interesting that I would take a photo of my feet and shoes?

Oh yeah, I also got a new camera.
First thing any camera does around this house is take photos of the dogs.
You'll know right away how it handles all the light bouncing off the white. Also how the much red eye you get from them.
This one is doing very well. Now on to the food!

Tomatoes are in full swing and we've got loads. The camera did very well with this test as well, didn't blow out the white plate.

What else should you do with a new camera?

OH YEAH, TAKE IT TO THE BEACH AND INTO THE WATER!
Did I mention this new camera is waterproof to 10 feet deep?

Sand and water won't get in it.
And it's a lot of fun!

I'm Just Wondering...

...Why isn't this girl some designers' muse yet?!

Like, seriously...Rihanna is the epitome of "Dope Like Shit!" Everyone might not be a fan of her music (I don't see why not), but you cannot deny the fact that she is on her way to be iconic in the fashion world. I know she has dabbled in a little business with a few designers but I'm just waiting on something HUGE from her.

I promise you guys will be the first people I tell about it, k?!

McMenamy Covers Vogue Italia

I was extremely excited when I saw Kristen McMenamy on the cover of Vogue Italia July 2009. Photographed by Steven Meisel and supposedly being a recognition of her supermodel status, the pictures look dope like shit!

Everything about the spread gives me what I need - the clothes, the atmosphere, the theme...everything! It all looks so cold and unalive, which gives inspiration for this upcoming Fall season. !

Sidebar: Is that Kristen's real hair?

The Black Barbie Issue

This same time last year, Italian Vogue made fashion world history with its "All Black" issue, which sold out on many newsstands. This year, they've decided to go for the same thing, with just a little twist. The issue comes with a delightful spread devoted solely to black Barbies. It is Barbie's 50th birthday, after all, and while this supplement is not full-sized like a regular magazine (it's about 6 inches wide; 7.5 inches long) somehow the doll scale makes sense.

I would've rather seen REAL black models posed, but I guess this will suffice. I still love it!

The Party Never Ends

Bastille Day or Fête Nationale as it is called in France didn't stop after our party (which we held on the weekend). On July 14th we met friends at "The Little Next Door". It is the charming cafe next to The Little Door restaurant. Its so French, the rumor is, if you aren't French and get a job there, you will have to perfect "zee accent".

The food is amazing. And the service is so authentically French! Incredibly slow, no hurries, no worries, it arrives when it does. It was nearly impossible to get the bill and they seemed shocked we wanted our desserts to go (we'd only been there two hours). They even allowed Mikka to bring her dog to the outdoor patio.

That evening we hit up another French dining institution, Comme Ça. They were slam packed that night and luckily we had been there previously an knew that service we received was not their normal style. Oh well, c'est la vie. It's who you go with that matters.
And we were there with Robb & Lewis and Landis and Tim. We continued the theme from our Bastille Day party by drinking French 75's. (Except Lyle. He'd had his fill on Saturday)

A few people (okay nearly everyone) have asked, "So who is from France?" Uh, none of us. But here is the great thing about the French culture, it's not hard to adopt. As much as I chaff at rules and regulations, the French way of enjoying life with many rules and regulations appeals to me. And the food, the glorious history of the food of France! You'd be a fool to not love that.

Lyle dit, "Viva La France!"

Cameron, Who?

Photography: Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott
Styling: Panos Yiapanis
Makeup: Lucia Pieroni (Streeters)
Hair: Luigi Murenu for John Frieda (Streeters)

Cameron Diaz covers and shoots a spread for the July/ August issue of V. She gets real sexy this go 'round. I almost couldn't tell it was her, from first glance.

A few facts about the shoot - The corset she's wearing is made of gaffer tape. Her tattoos are NOT real and were painted on just for the occasion by Darryl Gates of Diamond Jacks Tattoo Parlour.

And contrary to popular belief Diaz was not channeling Gwen Stefani, but getting inspiration from Madonna’s True Blue era.

Gisele Gives It

London Fog is getting ready for fall with an ad campaign featuring Gisele Bündchen. Yes, Ms. Prego, Gisele Bündchen — minus the baby bump. In the ads, Bündchen is posed down in just a trenchcoat. The campaign images revealed Bündchen’s pregnancy, but thanks to the grace of "retouching" her visible baby bump is not shown to “respect her privacy,” said chief marketing officer Dari Marder. What I don't understand is why she decided to hide the pregnancy this time when she didn't mind when she appeared in ad's for Rampage. The ads, which were shot by photographer Nino Muñoz in West Hollywood, will break in October magazines such as Glamour, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Vogue. I think the bump would've look a lot more cleaner and less...slutty, don't you think?

That Darn Anna...

Recently the members of the CFDA met to discuss options for the fashion industry to overcome the recession. A lot people suggested plenty of ideas from smaller production quantities to quicker fashion week/retail turn-around. But listen to what Ms. Anna had to say according to Jezebel.com...

"But Anna Wintour's proposed solution really takes the cake. The Vogue editor stood up to offer, "Could someone lead a committee that would make ground rules for retailers of when the discounting starts, and then all the retailers can agree to it?" Von Furstenberg interjected that that was illegal — in fact, if the big department stores had any such agreement, it would amount to price-fixing and collusion, an anti-trust lawsuit in the making. "Is that something we can change?" asked Wintour. "We have friends in the White House now!"

Spoiled.

May Every Single One of Your Sweet Dreams Come True

How many times has the artistic side of you rumbled with the logical side? Who usually wins out? For many years, I struggled with this, and often times the logical side won out. Why? Because it's easier, more logical, more socially acceptable. But the real story lies deeper still, for living a life of authenticity and intention is not a matter of right vs wrong or good vs evil - it's a matter of life vs mere survival.

So, what's a poor artist to do? It has taken me years to perceive not only in my head, but in my heart, that living anything other than an authentic life is meaningless, useless, petty, and perfectly uninspiring. For me, an inauthentic, unintentional life equals mere survival - not a particularly tasty choice. Instead, the life I choose involves a breathtaking explosion of creativity, self-expression, intentionality, and vulnerability.

Vulnerability, you ask? Why? Because we artists who tirelessly listen for the voices in the wind that rap upon our doors, and express those voices as genuinely, deeply, and beautifully as possible, expose ourselves. And exposure equals vulnerability. If you're clear about your personal vision, harsh words or form rejections mean nothing. If you're not, or feel the art is you, rather than is a part of you, you may fall prey to the critical words of others. If you allow it, words can slice you like a knife, cutting so deeply that you become paralyzed. But only if you allow it! Realizing you have the power to determine your success or failure gives you infinite freedom and ultimate success.

The greatest gift we artists can give ourselves and each other is permission to explore our talents fully, authentically, and intentionally, and to applaud and support each other in this ever-evolving endeavor.

So, to all my artsy friends out there - may your expressions be real, may your inspiration be bountiful, and may every single one of your sweet dreams come true.

Namaste! (I bow to you.)
